Frequently Asked Questions
What is psychotherapy?
Psychotherapy is a collaborative journey where we work together to explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences in a safe and confidential space. It’s a chance to gain new insights, develop coping strategies, and make meaningful changes in your life. I often describe it as “just a chat,” but a deeply focused one—a place where you can be truly heard and supported without any judgment.
What's the difference between individual and couples therapy?
Individual therapy is a dedicated space for you to focus entirely on your personal journey. It’s a place to explore your own challenges, identities, and goals.
Couples therapy is for you and your partner to address challenges within your relationship. My role is to facilitate a conversation where you can both be heard and understood, helping you to improve communication, resolve conflict, and build a stronger connection. The relationship is the client.
How long does therapy last and how often do we meet?
Each session lasts for 50 minutes. For therapy to be most effective, we typically meet once a week, particularly in the beginning. The overall length of your therapeutic journey is completely unique to you. Some people find that a few sessions are enough, while others prefer to work together on a longer-term basis. We will regularly review our work together to ensure you are getting what you need.
Is our conversation confidential?
Yes, confidentiality is an absolute priority. As a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), I am bound by their strict ethical guidelines. Everything you share with me will remain private. There are a few very rare exceptions to this rule, such as if there is a risk of serious harm to yourself or others, which would require me to break confidentiality for your safety. We would discuss these limits in our initial sessions.
How do I book an initial call?
The easiest way to begin is by reaching out to me via email or phone. We can schedule a free, no-obligation initial call that lasts about 15-20 minutes. This is a chance for us to connect, for you to ask any questions you have, and for us to decide if we would be a good fit to work together.
What does it mean to be a member of the BACP?
Being a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) means that I adhere to a professional and ethical framework designed to protect your well-being. It demonstrates my commitment to continuous professional development, ongoing supervision, and maintaining the highest standards of integrity and safety in my practice.
What if I don't know what to talk about?
That’s completely normal and nothing to worry about! Many people feel this way, especially at the beginning. It’s my role to help guide our conversation and create a space where you feel comfortable. We can start wherever you like, and together we’ll find a path into the topics that are most important to you.
Sometimes we may look at coping mechanisms during this time, or we can work out prompts to help you to keep to where you want to be.
Will I be judged for what I say?
Absolutely not. The core of my practice and who I am as an individual is built on providing a completely non-judgmental space. I am here to understand your experiences, not to evaluate them. Everything we discuss is held with the utmost respect and confidentiality. My goal is to create an environment where you can speak your truth openly, knowing that you will be met with empathy, acceptance, and a genuine desire to walk alongside you.
What about my mental health?
Supervision is a professional and ethical requirement for all practicing therapists.
